FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How far is Knox Details from Oak Ridge, TN?
Knox Details is about 25 miles from Oak Ridge, roughly a 25–30 minute drive depending on where you’re starting. The most direct route is to take Oak Ridge Turnpike south to Pellissippi Parkway (SR-162), which connects to our shop near Lovell Road in West Knoxville. There’s no need to drive through downtown Knoxville traffic.
Do Oak Ridge residents really need paint protection film?
Oak Ridge drivers are especially good candidates for PPF. The daily commute along Oak Ridge Turnpike and Pellissippi Parkway exposes vehicles to highway-speed rock chips, and ongoing DOE facility construction and roadwork in the area kick up gravel and debris. XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS film absorbs that impact before it reaches your paint, and its self-healing top coat handles minor scratches on its own.
What window tint is legal in Tennessee?
Tennessee law requires all side and rear windows to allow at least 35% of visible light through (35% VLT). The windshield can only be tinted above the AS-1 line. Reflective and mirrored tints are not permitted. Medical exemptions are available for drivers who need a darker tint for documented health reasons. Knox Details installs XPEL PRIME films that meet all Tennessee tint regulations.
Is ceramic coating worth it for vehicles parked outside in Oak Ridge?
Absolutely. Oak Ridge’s proximity to Melton Hill Lake and the Clinch River means higher year-round humidity, which accelerates water spotting and oxidation on unprotected paint. Trees and pollen are heavy in spring, and road salt appears in winter. A professional ceramic coating from Knox Details creates a hydrophobic barrier that repels water, resists contaminants, and makes routine washing significantly easier.
Can I drop my car off on my way to work at Y-12 or ORNL?
A: Many of our Oak Ridge customers do exactly that. Knox Details is open early enough for morning drop-offs, and our Sherway Road location is right off Pellissippi Parkway, the same corridor many Y-12 and ORNL employees use for their commute. You can leave your vehicle with us in the morning and pick it up after work or the following day, depending on the service.
What's the difference between ceramic coating and paint protection film?
They protect against different types of damage. Ceramic coating is a chemical-resistant, hydrophobic layer that guards against UV damage, bird droppings, tree sap, and water spots, making the vehicle much easier to wash. Paint protection film (PPF) is a physical urethane barrier that absorbs rock chips, road debris, and scratches before they reach the paint. Many Oak Ridge customers use both: PPF on high-impact areas like the hood, fenders, and bumper, and ceramic coating across the rest of the vehicle.
Why should I choose Knox Details over a dealership add-on?
Dealership tint and protection packages typically use lower-grade products with limited warranties, installed by staff who handle it as a side task. Knox Details is a 5-time XPEL Dealer of the Year with full-time, factory-trained technicians who specialize exclusively in PPF, ceramic coatings, and window tint. Our XPEL products come with manufacturer-backed warranties that most dealership add-ons can’t match.
How long does paint protection film last?
Professional-grade PPF like XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS typically lasts 7–10 years with proper care. The film’s self-healing top coat automatically repairs minor surface scratches when heated, and the warranty covers yellowing, cracking, and peeling. Given Oak Ridge’s mix of highway commuting, seasonal weather, and construction zone driving, PPF is one of the most cost-effective ways to preserve your vehicle’s finish and resale value in the long term.
Does Knox Details offer services for Tesla owners in Oak Ridge?
Yes. We have a dedicated Tesla services page and regularly work on Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles. Tesla’s single-stage paint is thinner than most manufacturers’, making PPF and ceramic coating especially important for protecting the finish. We also install ceramic window tint that doesn’t interfere with Tesla’s electronics, sensors, or Bluetooth connectivity.
How do I schedule an appointment from Oak Ridge?
Oak Ridge residents can schedule by calling (865) 246-9783 or using the contact form on our website. We recommend booking at least a week in advance for PPF and ceramic coating services, as these require dedicated time slots. Window tinting appointments typically have shorter lead times.

Testimonials

Just wanted to give a huge shoutout to Knox Details. They laid down some XPEL Paint Protection Film for me on my wife’s 2021 Toyota Highlander. These guys have been great to deal with from the first phone call, through the install, all the way to the pickup. They did a great job and I cannot be more satisfied. Huge thank you to Tim Buxton and the installer Thomas. Hit up Knox Details for all of your detailing, and paint protection needs!

After a ton of research we chose Knox Details to get our 2017 Porsche Panamera protected and what a great choice!!  Tim and his staff were very professional and exceptionally knowledgeable in all my questions.  We had the front-end full PPF, ceramic coated and detailed the interior at a great price!  Any and all concerns were put to rest when we picked up the car.  Looks AWESOME!!  I can’t wait to get my 2018 Z06 done!!  Thanks Knox Details

I was very impressed with Knox Details. My car looks better then expected. My car is 10 yrs old and getting traded in within a couple years. I didn’t want to sink a bunch of money into it, so I went with a cheaper service. Yes, there are still defects,  but the car looks better than I thought it would. Defects I expected to be noticeable are not. Defects I expected to be very visible are there because I know to look for them. I am very happy with the service I received. Jordan even went above and beyond on an unrelated issue. As someone that has worked in customer service for 20+ years, I was impressed.

Fantastic job on our new Buick Envision Avenir pretty much can’t see where the film starts and ends.
We are very pleased thank you Knox Details.

Tim and his team are bar far the best at what they do in east TN. We’ve have them do two cars and I won’t go anywhere else. It’s not the closest place to me nor is he going to be the cheapest but you get what you pay for. Thanks again Tim!!
